Lower heating costs with Ground Source Heat Pumps

Climate change and rising fuel costs are important matters of concern for everybody these days. Ground source heat pumps can be used to reduce both carbon footprint and heating costs for homeowners. Low level heat energy can be absorbed from the ground throughout the year to extract renewable heat energy which can be used to produce heat energy for heating homes and commercial buildings. Subsoil temperatures in most locations are relatively even thoroughout the year. In the majority of places useful heat energy can be produced even if outside air temperature falls below freezing point.

Once installed, geothermal heat energy produced by a ground source heat pump can be used to enable lower heating costs and smaller CO2 emissions for homes and commercial buildings. Carbon emissions from a ground source heat pump are usually smaller than outputs from traditional gas-fired, oil-fired or electric heating.

A ground source heat pump system utilizes the same technology to that used by a standard domestic refridgerator. Heat energy is pumped out from the contents of the refridgerator. In the case of a refidgerator extracted heat is simply dispersed as waste heat. With a ground source heat pump the extracted heat is useful heat energy which is utilized to provide heating for a building or to create a hot water supply.

Frequent alternatives to ground source heat pumps are air source heat pumps which extract heat energy from the air and water source heat pumps which extract heat from lakes and rivers.
