Secrets of a Running a Successful European Conference

Thursday 27 August 2009 @ 4:01 am

Introduction

When a company or organisation wants to put on a conference or large event, it is unlikely they would consider doing it themselves. Most companies do not have all the necessary in-house expertise, and releasing personnel from their usual work could be less cost efficient than bringing in the experts. There is also a great deal more to organising a conference than most people would realise in that it is a very stressful and technical activity. The client therefore would usually call in another company that specialises entirely in conference and event management.

There are a great many companies offering Corporate Event Management Services so competition is keen. Even if you are the best you still have to compete with others who offer lower prices and might appear to be less expensive. One of the ways of countering the cut throat business in the UK is to look at offering Conference Production Services in Europe. European managers then have the option of using a UK or EU company to provide for their Conference or Event. UK conference services are more than able to offer competitive prices. In the current economic climate with the pound at its lowest value for many years, UK companies have a distinct advantage in the EU market. .

I plan to take you through a step by step account of the stages of managing an event in Europe using examples from a recent contract in Rome.

Step 1

As a company offering conference and event management services it is vital that the quality of service provided is professional and value for money. To this end attention to detail is paramount. The project manager will know his team and the quality and reliability of the technical staff, the quality of the electronic equipment and the soundness of the sets that are used. Once these details are in place and proven on previous jobs then the pitch to the client can be confident and knowledgeable so that the client can be reassured things will run smoothly. If you can trust your team to do a good job then the client can trust you to do a good job.

Step 2

The Brief

The brief we were given was a three and a half day conference event in Rome in early February for approximately 150 international delegates attending, the majority of whom would be travelling from the USA.

Technical Specification

The technical requirement was to combine a rear projection set and a four speaker PA system with radio microphones. Also data and video switching, wireless table microphones for delegate interaction with presenters in question and answer sessions. They wanted two show laptop PC’s loaded with PowerPoint and various video software to assist with conversion of any extra footage required to a suitable format for projection.

Step 3

A quotation was provided for all the physical hardware and the technical requirements and the services of the project manager and his team. No subcontracting was needed. Details were agreed and the quote was accepted by the client and a contract issued. It is important to make sure you have a contract and in it, a clause for cancellation charges.

When there are sudden emergencies can you trust your event company to deal with the problems that arise?

Step 4

When organising any event abroad we find it more reliable and economical to use our own technical equipment and workforce who we know and trust. There are no problems with language and the team understand the technical issues that are likely to be encountered. They are used to working together, each having their strengths to contribute to the whole, and they can be trusted to do the best possible job with the minimum of fuss. However planning is a key activity particularly when organising meetings and conference events abroad. If you have forgotten something it’s too late to go back when you have driven 600 miles. So having decided to transport the full conference set, staging and equipment by van to Rome we then worked out the details of how best to achieve it.There will always be last minute and additional requirements from presenters and our team can be relied upon to deal with last minute glitches, that need immediate and effective technical support, as a matter of course.

Step 5

Transportation

The size of the event is critical to the choice of transportation. In our Rome example it was possible to convey all the required equipment in a hire van which could be driven using a standard UK driving licence. If the scale of a conference or exhibition event is much larger it would be recommended to use a dedicated freighting company to collect, deliver and return staging and technical elements to the destination. Using a dedicated freighting company also has the benefit of delivering the key personnel to the event without them being tired out after driving across Europe. In other words the team can be flown out to the event so that they are fresher on arrival. With cheap flights to Europe it can also work out more cost effective than overnight stays for eight or ten people driving en-route.

However, in this case it was decided that the event technicians would drive the van to Rome which would still be well within budget for all staging and technical elements. When hiring a vehicle it is essential to pay attention to maximum load capacity of the vehicle. The weight of the technical equipment and set must be less than the maximum load and once the main systems are onboard, care must be taken not to fill it to the brim with extra bits and pieces.

It is so easy, when being helpful, to add the client event material, such as delegate registration systems and materials, brochures, display and graphic panels. The result can easily mean that the maximum safe load allowance for the vehicle is compromised. As the load capacity is a legal necessity it is never a good idea to agree to extra items on behalf of the client without being aware of the likely impact on overall weight.

Step 6

The Journey

As the distance was twelve hundred miles there and back it was decided that with an allotted journey time of two and a half days each way to Rome would be sufficient. Although it would have been possible to travel to Rome in two days we have learned from experience to allow a margin for any delays en route. It also allows for the technicians themselves to be fresh enough after the road trip to be able to work effectively.

When travelling long distance across Europe and at a time of year when the weather might be inclement, it is essential that the safety of personnel and other road users is paramount. By dividing the travel time between two drivers and rotating them every two hours, we have found that neither is unduly fatigued. This system allows large distances of up to 600 miles a day to be covered with safety. Regular breaks help to maintain concentration and awareness, with total travel times of no more than ten hours in any day and preferably no more than eight hours a day. It is never advisable to rely on a bare minimum of journey time for any long distance travel to meet an event deadline.

Team building, product launches and year end celebrations have become big business for conference management specialist companies.

Having decided on the route to be taken from the UK to Rome we left the UK via a ferry from Dover to Calais and then journeyed to an area just North of Dijon on day one. From Dijon on day two, the journey continued as far as Bologna via the Mont Blanc tunnel. We decided on day three, to make an early start for the half day drive from Bologna to Rome and deliver the equipment to the venue, then rest up for the remainder of the day so the crew would be fresh to start work the next morning.

Navigation across Europe is now much more straight forward with Satellite, but we would also suggest printed route plans and local maps of any places where a stop-over is planned. It has sometimes been the case that even with the latest updated information the Sat Nav cannot always find the precise location of the road you want, due to the ongoing construction of many new motorway networks. You may find yourself suddenly stuck on a road it doesn’t know and this is when the co-driver can be a great help to navigate you through the confusion.

Step 7

Accommodation for Overnight Stops

Choosing accommodation for suitable overnight stops is worth some research. There is a plentiful choice of motel stops near to all major roads in France and Italy all of which are reasonably priced. However, there are superb guest houses away from the main cities and major roads which offer a much more relaxing experience for a tired traveller and are usually cheaper than the chain motels. Often these places have secure parking enhancing vehicle security from theft and damage. After all, when freighting audio-visual systems with a value stretching to tens of thousands of pounds, peace of mind is useful to say the least.

Step 8

On Site Conference Production

On arrival in Rome we drove the van to the conference venue so that the audio-visual equipment and staging could be unloaded directly into the conference room. This was to secure the items and have everything ready for fitting the following day. Getting an early start to set up the equipment allowed for the client to begin presentation rehearsals on the afternoon of the rig day. Later on the same day there was to be an evening reception and brief welcome presentation to all attending delegates. The setting up procedures are tried and tested and the team worked like a well oiled machine so that all the audio-visual elements were complete and in place on schedule and all the technical systems were working correctly by the time the client presenters arrived from the USA.Our job is to make sure all the technical elements are set up and in working order by the time the client wants to use them and test their own systems. It is at this point that the last minute glitches will probably occur.

Step 9

Audio Visual and Production Content

An example of the kind of last minute technical hitches that has to be resolved is when a conference presenter is unable to submit his presentation during the pre-production period and will arrive on site with it in his briefcase (Probably having worked on it during his flight over). The production team will not know until late in the process what presentation format is required. However the presenter will still expect his material to be incorporated seamlessly into a master slide deck. If a conference set uses a wide screen projection format the content will need to be generated in a sixteen by nine aspect ratio. Unknown to the presenter however, the offered material may have been built around a slide template that used a four by three aspect ratio instead. Depending on content, this may have minimal effect on the look of the presentation but if there are images of people, or pie chart graphs, these will then appear as stretched and elliptical shapes which would be unsatisfactory. Fonts and text boxes may move out of alignment and embedded applications such as XL may well be impossible to read. The added value for European clients of using a UK based corporate event supplier is that the British are famous for their ability to be innovative and come up with solutions to problems at the last minute and particularly under pressure.

My understanding of what audio visual equipment means is that it could be anything from simple interactive whiteboards to the full works with plasma screens, video control and PA systems as well as integrated audio output for live events.

During the rehearsals for the first day of the conference one of the American presenters had travelled to site with a power point presentation containing video footage. Unfortunately the video content had not been embedded into his presentation so it did not appear as he expected. The video content was hyper-linked to files that were inaccessible from the PowerPoint presentation – supplied to us on a memory stick. Fortunately with our technical knowledge we were able to download the video from source and convert the video footage into a high resolution format that would be compatible with our audio visual systems. This is when event support specialists, who speak English as a first language and are familiar with the requirements of such last-minute complications, are priceless.

In an ideal scenario, all presentation content will have been submitted during the pre-production phase to minimise such last minute glitches, but more often than not on-site changes are required to re-format a presentation. Whilst it is by no means out of the question that a local AV company might well have been able to do the same, feedback from client events in Europe suggests that when they have used a local supplier they have often failed to be sufficiently expert to support such needs.

Step 10

During the Conference

Over the period of the two and a half day event we were able to further boost our reputation with the client and delegates. Something that they had overlooked until the last minute was to provide appropriate themed music for role-play exercises. Although it had not been part of the original conference production brief, we were able to provide apt and timely presentation support at very short notice from our on-site database of over thirty thousand music tracks.Again, this was something which many of our European competitors may not have been able to achieve within the time frame and it would probably have added an extra cost.

Whilst seeming relatively negligible points in themselves the above types of scenarios can be very stressful for conference and event organisers, who already have responsibilities that go beyond the presentation content. The corporate conference event being organised by the client is a huge task of delegate management and event logistics, so that any projects that can be left to an experienced dedicated event management team such as ourselves, frees them up to focus on their own tasks of delivering a successful delegate experience.

Step 11

Language Issues in European Conferencing.

When working in Europe either as an event manager, conference producer, or production company, it is always helpful if you are able to communicate directly with the people you meet at the venue and along the way. Whilst all major event management destinations and hotels across Europe have staff who will speak English, there are occasions when they will not be available. We are lucky to have colleagues with rudimentary skills in French, Spanish and German who are all keen to improve their language skills. They are prepared to have a go whenever possible to try out what they have learned and this has sometimes proved to be invaluable. It may seem obvious to say, but we recommend that at least one on your production team should have a working knowledge of the local language and should be encouraged to use their language skills as often as possible. It is often surprising how a little effort can generate a much better response from those who you are working alongside.

Conclusion

If you haven’t given much consideration to the idea of working in Europe then we really recommend it. Conference events in Europe can be undertaken by a UK event production company at comparable cost to our European colleagues in the audio-visual supply sector. Favourable exchange rates add a further competitive edge to the costs of bringing your audio-visual and staging from the UK. Researching and planning the route and method by which conferencing systems are freighted and delivered will provide surprisingly low cost delivery solutions.

Taking your chosen conference production team with you to Europe will give increased peace of mind with regard to the quality of your technical support. Our client in Rome was very happy with the service and level of attention to detail we brought to their conference and repeat European corporate events are now routinely part of our conferencing diary. Fortunately our team really enjoy the experience of travelling abroad and having the opportunity during ‘down time’ to experience life in another culture and country. Particularly at the last night celebration which, rather like a topping out ceremony, tradition dictates must take place at the end of each show!

A lot of personal indemnity insurance vendors can be detected online

Tuesday 25 August 2009 @ 3:23 pm

When the customer wants a good personal casualty assurance then you might use a cost research machine to find a personal solution. There you can detect the appropriate private indemnity insurance quotation out of the multitude of insurance companies. The assurance market is ambigious to most clients. There are numerous assurance providers. As a private person the client hardly can get the overview. Nevertheless one wants to find the best solution. The following Internet site gives a cost-free comparison of German personal casualty insurance providers: Privathaftpflicht Versicherung Vergleich. There one can retrieve an individual personal casualty assurance research in a short time.

Everyone should consider some important points when searching the best private indemnity insurance on the German marketplace: Your private casualty assurance checks by trained staff, whether the claims against you are entitled, and then regulates them. With a personal casualty insurance you and your family have protection against the typical liability hazard of everyday life in the private sector. Your personal liability insurance will help you even if unjustified claims are asserted against you.

The clerk of the assurance offerer works on your individual case and decides upon the relevant factual and legal situation whether claims are justified or not. If demands are asserted against you, which you legally are not liable for, then your insurance will help you in the defense of such demands and will give you legal shelter. It is not necessary to visit all the German personal indemnity insurance companies by oneself when looking for your personal solution. You can obtain an online comparison and even effect your personal indemnity insurance on this site: Private Haftpflicht Versicherung.

Your personal indemnity assurance manages the handling of the case and the claims of third parties. If your assurance provider comes to the conclusion that you are not liable for something, they help you even if anyone sues you therefore. Without having a private casualty insurance, you must deal by yourself with the charges of the victim or you need to mandate an advocate to do so for you. E.g. in leisure activities or sports anybody might accidentally cause an injury that can have a large financial size. When you e.g. on the ski slopes get involved into an accident, which leads to permanent health injury, the other party may assert enormous demands.

Although the private liability assurance was a voluntary insurance in Germany, everybody should cover their own exposure to be charged by a third party in the event of damage. Without personal casualty assurance you are liable for legitimate claims of third parties with your total private equity. If you do not have a private indemnity insurance, it is the victim that confronts you personally with their claims. You then have to decide whether to pay or to dispute by yourself or to mandate a lawyer. A private casualty assurance would have done all that for you. Then you do not stand alone in the event of injury but have professional support by your side.

NLP: used in business, but does it work?

Monday 24 August 2009 @ 4:42 pm

NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) is one of those disciplines which has found a lot of acceptance in business, but is not so well received by scientists, who say there is not sufficient proof from large-scale tests. The fact that there are several different schools of NLP does not help convince scientists, but the different schools of thought are about details rather than the concepts developed by Grinder and Brandler in the 1970s.These concepts developed into courses and now courses for NLP practitioners are offered by NLP practitioners in cities throughout the USA, Canada and the UK.

NLP is all about speaking and behaving in specific ways, and it said that if you do this you will be able influence people to accept your views – or to buy your product. The ‘programming’ refers to that concept that by behaving in a certain manner you can program people to behave in the way you would like. This has nothing to do with hypnotism, but is more a case of getting people to like you. For this reason, NLP courses are tailored both for business and for individuals.

It is not surprising that NLP business training is popular with many companies, so NLP practitioners offer courses tailored to business people as well as to individuals.

How do you establish rapport with a person? Well, it is well known that we respond better to people who are like us, and appear to share the same values. On the other hand, we are less likely to be influenced by people who behave in a completely different way. For example, someone who always wears jeans and T-shirt is more likely to be influenced to buy from someone who dresses the same way than from a man in a business suit and tie.

Similarly, when you speak to someone if you stand or sit in the same way that they are, NLP practitioners believe that you will find it easier to influence them. These NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) techniques are used by trainers of sales people in many industries.

Best Treatment for Hemorrhoids

Monday 24 August 2009 @ 1:27 pm

Hemorrhoids are usually not a subject of polite conversation. However, if you have hemorrhoids and are suffering from the accompanying problems, you need to do more than just talk about it, you need to DO something about it and do it now!

When you search for info about the problem you will find tons of potions, ointments, creams and potions that offer relief. When you try them you soon find out that many don’t work at all. Those that do work are only effective for a day or so and then you have to apply it again.

What you really want is not a perpetual treatment, but a long-term, lasting, final cure for hemroids.

Look, everything has a cause and an effect. When you only focus on treating the symptoms, only look for a treatment of hemorrhoids, you will never get at the root cause and find the cure.

Hemorrhoids are not contagious! They are not an infectious disease but a condition brought on by your environment! You get them for certain reasons of lifestyle and how you treat yourself. If you change these causative factors, you go most of the way towards getting rid of the problem they cause/permit.

The Doctors and Pharmacists will be happy to “treat” you, for as long as you keep paying them. No one is as interested in actually curing hemorrhoids, once and for all time, as you are. It’s your body, your life. Take charge! Don’t settle for second best!

Focusing on only short term relief solutions could trap you into a lifetime of paying for the same treatment while the condition gets worse. But if you focus on the best way to get rid of external hemorrhoids, you can find a cure and live your life hemorrhoid free!

Web Design Calpe

Sunday 23 August 2009 @ 1:50 pm

Why Every Local Business in Calpe MUST Have A Website

Do you own a local Calpe business? If you do, then your business absolutely must have a website if you’re hoping to remain competitive in your marketplace. Web design in Calpe know that mMany business owners don’t realize this. They think, “sure, if you’re doing business online like Amazon or eBay then obviously you need a website. But I’m not selling my products or services online, just locally, so I don’t have any need for a website design in calpe.” That sounds sensible at first glance, but they couldn’t be more wrong.

Because times have changed, and the way people get information has changed, too. Radically.

Ten years ago, a local company who offered web design in calpe could get by without a website. Back then, the Internet was new, and not every family had a computer hooked up to the worldwide web. And, for many of those people who were online, the Internet was sort of exotic – it was something of a hobby. They would spend their online time in chat rooms talking to new friends all over the world, or looking for Beanie Babies on eBay, or downloading the latest cool game.

Businesses in Calpe these days should be going all out for lead generation. The current economic climate here in Spain means there is just no other way to run a business at the moment. Make sure your website has a lead capture page and that all leads are collected and marketed to effectively.

Search the best assurance offer via online comparison

Sunday 23 August 2009 @ 1:22 pm

The insurance market is opaque to most people. There are many insurance offerers. As a client you can hardly get the overview. Nevertheless one wants to obtain the right solution. Nowadays it is a good idea to use a tariff comparison site as Preiswerte Grundbesitzerhaftpflichtversicherung, when you are in need of a particular assurance. There you can retrieve the right insurance quote from a great number of assurance vendors.

Some important German assurances – for example Vergleich Hundeversicherung – which are mentioned in this context are:

The dog owner insurance: Without a dog owner insurance every dog owner carries a very high risk of liability when his four-legged friend once causes a damage. When the dog runs over the street and causes a traffic accident, one can be held responsible for all damages of persons and vehicles. On the German assurance market there are many dog assurance suppliers. As a dog owner it is not easy to find the best company and contract for your specific needs. The research for the right insurance can be done on the Internet. There are good sites which offer free comparisons of German dog owner insurances.

The home assurance: For many owners the own house is the largest expense in their life. Hazards such as fire, water or storm can cause immense damages or even a total loss. Therefore a property insurance is essential for every house owner. The household effects are not insured. This should be done by a separate household inventory assurance. The elements of fire assurance and supply water assurance should always be included. Natural hazards might be a great risk for your building. So everybody should search a building insurance which is covering these special risks. Assurance protection against storm damage should definitely be considered because of the rise of heavy storms during the past years in Germany.

The private medical assurance: Private medical assurance can be taken by self-employed people – regardless of their revenues. As an employee you may switch to the private sickness insurance, if your annual gross income lies 3 years in a row over the assurance limit of 48,150 Euros (equivalent to 4012.50 Euros a month, status of 2008). Also officials, judges and members of parliament are usually privately insured. The German private sickness assurance usually offers superior benefits than the statutory health assurance. Many insurance providers give the option of making modulation to the tariff of the active contract.

The occupational disablement assurance: Consumer advisers have repeatedly pointed out that the vocational inability assurance besides the private liability insurance is the most important assurance even. The loss of manpower is an existential risk. Because of being no longer able to work means to earn nothing. Physical hardship often is the result. The state barely helps in such a case – the statutory pension assurance pays only a minimal disability pension for all people born up from the year 1961. The reason for the predominant number of vocational invalidity cases is disease. Less common cause than disease is a previous accident. About every 4th worker and every 5th employee must quit their jobs for illness reasons before the time and must go into early retirement. When the claims for sickness benefits paid by the sickness assurance and for unemployment benefits are exhausted, you are confronted with a large money gap when not having an occupational inability assurance.

The automobile indemnity insurance: If you get a car for yourself, you have to insure it. The automobile casualty assurance is required by law – without proof of liability insurance already the admission of the car is impossible. The car indemnity assurance helps whenever you culpably cause a damage to another road user. Fully comprehensive cover or part insurance cover can voluntarily be effected. Hull assurances pay for damages of your own car.

The German Riester-Assurance: The so called Riester-Assurance is a government-funded private pension you can seize to close your personal pension gap. It is both safe and attractive: During the active working life, you pay contributions into a private annuity contract, a bank or savings fund, additionally you get growing state allowances and tax allowances as a bonus. Later you will receive monthly benefits a lifetime – in the form of an old-age pension or a payment plan. Each employed professional, who is not willing to rely on the statutory pension exclusively, should take into consideration a Riester-Assurance agreement. Also officials, judges and soldiers belong to the circle of beneficiaries of public allowance for Riester-Assurance plans.

The above mentioned insurances and several more can be found at comparison sites on the Internet, such as: Rechtsschutzversicherung Vergleich. This comparison website is independent from a single assurer and gives a sound overview of the market.

Marketing to the Online Generation Using Surveys and Questionnaires

Sunday 23 August 2009 @ 1:19 pm

Customers are tough and demanding. They are extremely media aware and increasingly cynical and it is a clever marketeer who can get through to them. Online surveys breath new life into the traditional survey format and offer a unique way of interaction – providing you with all the benefits of the Internet without the programming. Here are ten reasons why they may be the silver bullet marketeers’ need, complete with examples supplied by Martin Day, managing director of online survey website Survey Galaxy – one of a new breed of websites making online surveys quicker and cheaper

1. It’s cheap as chips
Select the right survey website and creating surveys can be free of any charge and the cost to publish excellent value for money.
Information harvested from surveys can be reused and repackaged in other marketing and PR for use in press outlets making it a very efficient form of information gathering.

2. It’s easy peasy
Anyone can create and publish an online survey. Survey sites allow people who are interested in the benefits of surveys, rather than technicalities, to side-step the required programming skills and create relevant up-to-the-minute surveys, instantly – surveys that are even easier to complete than they are to make.

3. Anyone can play
Promoting an online survey can be via email (with a link enclosed), through a link from a website or as a referenced by other forms of advertising. Anyone who has the URL can be connected instantly to the survey, at a time that’s convenient to them, 24×7.

4. We’ve all got an opinion – and we like to give it
The majority of customers do not view surveys as spam and will welcome the opportunity to voice their opinion and have the chance to make an impact on a brand. They provide a good method for broaching sensitive subjects with concerned employees; a survey asking a workforce on their opinion of change allows the key issues to be raised in a positive manner and encourages employee participation. Deliver a message to individuals and then have the feedback collated in a manageable form.

5. Get inside your respondent’s head
You can lead a customer to an advertisement but you can’t make them think. Surveys have the advantage of engaging each respondent, who thinks about the question before giving their response.

6. Build a relationship
It needn’t all end at the end of the survey – while you have the respondent’s attention and they are in the mood you can ask if they want to sign up for more information or a regular newsletter – making the most of the window of opportunity where you have their interest.

7. Link your survey to other online information
Take the opportunity to maximise the interest of those responding to your survey by referencing related information. By including links within the survey to websites that offer detailed information you are able to reinforce the marketing message.

8. Subtly does it
Surveys can help associate, in the mind of the respondents, a product with a number of positive attributes. By listing a product’s features and then asking the respondent to score on how important they are, regardless of their response, the product will be associated with the feature.

9. Not just selling
A survey is an effective, quick and easy method to promote and gain acceptance for a difficult proposal; maybe a public body trying to gain acceptance and support for a particular scheme.
Take the example of a city trying to gain support from the general public for their bid to host a future Olympic Games. With a survey you have the opportunity to explain each benefit putting the respondent in a much better frame of mind to appreciate an argument and be more positive in their response. Your primary goal may be to promote a cause but you will automatically receive useful feedback that can then be used to fine tune the overall marketing strategy.

10. Fresh topics engage interest
Think laterally and a lively and imaginative approach to surveys can provide a ‘hook’ to engage respondents. The survey subject can be targeted at a particular group on a subject close to theirs hearts. A survey’s marketing message can take the form of a simple brand awareness message by stating that the survey is being sponsored by brand name, or by finding a link from the subject matter to the product – something that is surprisingly easy and highly effective.

Discover the benefits of including in your website a Public Survey section as many people who enjoy completing crosswords and doing word puzzles enjoy completing surveys. Low cost and automated, having a public survey notice board as part of a website will help increase traffic and establish a loyal and returning following. Unlike discussion boards there is no opportunity for people to disrupt the site by inappropriate remarks as the survey results are displayed in summary form enabling them to dispense with moderators and maintenance.

Customers do not often view surveys as spam and the majority welcome the opportunity to voice their opinion and the chance to have an impact on a brand.

Many of the techniques and a few more are contained in the following sample survey created using Survey Galaxy’s survey software tool.

History of a Successful Family Owned Business

Friday 21 August 2009 @ 9:40 pm

World War II veteran William E. Mahone founded Atlas Floors San Antonio in 1948, fulfilling a war-time dream of owning his own business. Bill and his wife Laura opened a new flooring business with the help of a Reconstruction Finance Corporation loan of $1600 in a rented building in Downtown San Antonio, Texas.

As their efforts proved successful, the Mahones borrowed a sum of $1,145.80 in order to relocate in a combination business and home, on Hildebrand Avenue. There a second generation literally grew up in the business. Bill Mahone Jr. (current President of Atlas Floors), mother Laura, and his two sisters (Jessica and Annie) were always involved in the family enterprise. In 1972, company founder William passed away leaving Laura and the second generation to continue hands-on operation of the flooring company. Laura and the second generation continued hands on operation of Atlas Floors in San Antonio Texas.

Bill Mahone Jr. and his mother each took out loans from Hermann Sons in order to build a larger showroom and warehouse in their San Antonio location. The new accommodation more than doubled the original operations size. As San Antonio steadily grew through the years, so did Atlas Floors. In the year 2000 Atlas Floors opened a second showroom along Highway 281 at San Pedro and Donella. Shortly thereafter, Atlas Floors joined the largest cooperative in the flooring industry, Carpet One. This positive relationship led to the opening of their newest and largest flooring store in August of 2008 in Northwest San Antonio at Loop 1604 and Braun.

Today, Atlas Floors Carpet One in San Antonio Texas continues as a family owned business.
